A bit about stress - but not enough to stress you out.

Stress is a part of life - the part that we associate with negative thoughts, painful emotions and self-destructive behaviors. But, what if you could look at your stress with a completely different perspective? One that allows you more peace of mind, presence of mind, and even more joy?

Perhaps you cannot control what is going to happen around you, but you can certainly control your own reaction. Your reaction is the clue to having a wonderful life -

First of all, what is stress?

Well, stress is a “state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.”

 What causes stress?

Stress is caused by a “stressor,” which puts you into a state of mental or emotional strain. The more stressors in your life, the more stressed out you may become.

 What are some common stressors?

One of the most common types of stress is about job concerns. Maybe we have tension with a co-worker, boss, or we’re trying to manage a heavy workload.

We may have money stress due to loss of work, reduced retirement, and medical bills.

Worry about a health crisis, our own or a family member, terminal or chronic illness.

Relationship stress, as in a break-up, arguments with family or friends, or death of a spouse can create problems for us in all areas of our lives.

How do I get rid of my stress?  I keep hearing that I have to reduce it?  How do I do that?

We can learn ways to reduce the amount of pressure and tension that our stressors put on us. However, since stress is normal, we can't get rid of ALL of our stress - that is why we must understand what our stress is telling us. When we can do that, the benefits are endless.

Are you saying that stress can be beneficial?  How in the world could that be?

Once we learn to see our stress in a different light and with a new perspective, it doesn't have to have the same affect it used to, and we can begin to actually notice the gifts it has to offer us.

We can become more productive since we won't be living in past regrets or future worries. We can discover how to really live in the moment, and find our happiness there.

When you look at your stress differently, your world changes for you. Since we can't get rid of all of our stress, we can change the way we look at it.
