Opening the Doorways to Change

The practice of psychotherapy is also known as talk therapy, counseling or, simply, therapy. Whatever you prefer to call it, psychotherapy is a highly effective way to treat a wide range of life stressors. These are sometimes called psychosocial stressors, since they can come in the form of biological, psychological or social stress.

My therapeutic approach is based on the idea that your own thoughts and beliefs can lead to negative moods and unhealthy behaviors. Quite naturally, you might think someone else or a certain situation is to blame for your problems. That''s a normal human reaction. We each have automatic but sometimes inaccurate thoughts or beliefs when we react to certain situations.

These "wrongly tuned" thoughts often lead us to experience anxiety, fear, depression or anger. Working together in our sessions, I'll help you become aware of destructive thoughts and beliefs and learn to view situations in a more realistic light. This will enable you to respond and behave in a healthier way for your own benefit — even if the situation itself hasn't changed.

This type of therapy is an excellent choice when experiencing grief, depression, anxiety, anger, abuse, medical illnesses, marriage difficulties, relationship issues, problems at work, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, phobias or other fears and social insecurities.

During our first session, we'll meet for 90 minutes to discuss in-depth details about your concerns. Although it may seem difficult to open up to someone you have just met, the information you provide helps me gain a deeper understanding of your situation. It might take a few sessions for a full evaluation of your situation and issues.

At any time during our first few sessions, feel free to ask me questions about my general approach, the goals for your treatment, how long therapy might last, when and how to contact me during a crisis and any other details you may want to know about our therapeutic relationship.

Our life is what our thoughts make of it -- Marcus Aurelius

Therapeutic treatment is unique to each patient, but in general our psychotherapy sessions will help us both identify the troubling life issues that brought you to seek help. After that, you and I will decide which goals you want to set and achieve.

Our next step will be to help you become aware of your thoughts and feelings about issues that concern you.
Thoughts are very powerful and aren't always based on logic. I will encourage you to share your thoughts, including what you say inwardly to yourself, as well as your interpretations of situations and your beliefs about yourself, other people and events.

Inaccurate or negative thoughts can lead you to react in undesirable ways. To help you determine whether distorted thinking is contributing to your issues, I'll ask you to focus on your physical, emotional and behavioral responses to troubling events. In this way, you'll learn to identify negative or inaccurate thought patterns and work to replace them with more positive, accurate thinking.

I'll also encourage you to test the truth of your thoughts and beliefs. This may include asking yourself whether your view fits the facts and logic of an event and whether there might be other explanations. Because long-held thoughts and beliefs feel normal and right to you, recognizing inaccuracies in your thinking may not come easily.

By changing your views of situations and your views of yourself, you will find more constructive ways to cope with difficulties that come your way.
